Jay Clendenin of the Los Angeles Times wrote an article on the EVER-INCREASING popularity of longboard skateboards over the more regularily seen old school skateboards!
It appears the rise in popularity of longboard skateboards over old school skateboards has been infuenced in part by a love of snowboarding!

To quote from the article itself;
“It was the lure of the snow that drew Jia Yee to longboard skateboarding… The UCLA biology student loved the feeling of schussing down a mountain on a snowboard — but she was less enthusiastic about the cost of the winter sport, its seasonal nature and the necessary travel… Longboarding seemed like a good way to get the same rush.”
Snowboarding enthusiasts can get the same thrills they experience on the slopes on the street! Longboards have helped join the two worlds of snowboarding and skateboarding even closer together — and (as said in the article) have enabled lovers of snowboarding to get the thrills MUCH CHEAPER!
“…and unlike surfing or snowboarding, there’s no waiting for snow, good surf or even dry weather.”
Old school skateboards are still the more popular of the two varieties, but longboard skateboards are closing the gap.
At the end of the day though, who really cares?
As long as you have fun using whatever type of skateboard you want to - (or whatever type of skateboard suits your style best) - then thats ALL that matters!
